In order to study properly for organic chemistry, you may need to adjust your study habits. One common problem is attempting to memorize vast amounts of information. If you simply try to memorize the material, the exams will often look foreign to you! The best way to study involves three processes: 1) learn (yes, memorize the reagents), 2) work through problems in the notes or in the text, and 3) do as many sample problems as you can! You can find sample problems on this site.
Studying for mechanisms is slightly different. Most exams will have mechanisms that resemble similar ones that you will find in the notes. Make sure you understand each process in a mechanism and why the arrows are flowing in their respective directions. If you can understand (not memorize) each mechanism presented in lecture, your chances of success are much greater on the exam!
Finally, it is important to remember that there are no shortcuts for hard work. The more work you put into organic chemistry, the better your score will be! Use these tips to get you through organic and graduate on time!
