One of the chief complaints that I often hear is that there is too much work that has to be done on your own time. Well, sorry to say, that is certainly an aspect of organic chemistry. There is often an immense workload that is required. Sometimes this can seem daunting and too difficult to handle. Does this sound like you? If it does, follow these simple steps to keep your head above water and attain your goals in organic.
Step # 1. Don't wait! If you put off studying for organic, your chances of falling behind are greatly increased. In fact, the best advice is to at least go over your notes the same day of lecture. This way, you will have a better memory of all concepts covered. Remember, there is a great deal of material that must be covered so the course goes rather quickly!
Step #2. Write down all new and relevant reactions that were discussed. If you feel like you may have missed some, check the text. At the end of most chapters, there are often reaction summaries. In addition, you should find other examples of the same reactions to help recognize them more clearly.
Step # 3. Make sure you do some practice problems! I recommend starting with the problems in the chapter to help you understand the concepts. Once you have mastered those, move to the more complicated end-of-chapter problems.
Step # 4. Ask! If you are stuck, find someone to ask. If you need help on a particular topic, send us a note! Chances are, you are not the only one who has that question.
Good Luck!
